As many people know, Darren Reed, District Commissioner, announced that after 7 years at the helm he will be standing down on 31st March 2012. After a long search and appointment process, Darren confirmed that John Papworth, the Explorer Leader at Woodley has accepted the post and will be Romsey District’s new head. “I’ve worked with John for a number of years” said Darren “and I know that he will do a great job for Romsey”.
John becomes Romsey’s 17th District Commissioner in 102 years, joining the list of such worthy people as Col. Sir H. Dixon, KCB, Major. C. Sloane-Stanley, Col. F. L. Footner DSO, TD, DL, and Dr. P. Johnson OBE. At 33, John is probably Romsey’s youngest DC replacing the previous DC, Darren, in that claim to fame.

Romseys New District Commissioner
John started his Scouting at 10th Romsey (Woodley & Crampmoor) Scout Group as a Cub Scout in 1986 and then transferred to Sirl Troop before joining the Venture Scout Unit where he gained his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award and became a Queen’s Scout. Following the introduction of the Scout Network section, John became Romsey’s Network Coordinator.
John’s first adult appointment was with Sirl Troop as a Sectional Assistant before transferring to the Explorer Scout Section at its formation in March 2002 as Assistant Explorer Scout Leader and subsequently Leader. It was in 1995 that John began working with Darren at 10th Romsey Sirl Troop and they have been close Scouting colleagues ever since.
During his time in Scouting, John has also been the County Adviser for Explorers, led sub-camps at both Suisse Adventure 2003 (a county expedition to Switzerland) and Brownsea Reloaded in 2005 (part of the European Scout Jamboree). John also managed all the sub-camps during the Centenary World Scout Jamboree Celebrations on Brownsea Island in 2007, and has provided ground support for Bear Grylls’ Scouting trips around the UK.
In 2008, John was awarded the Chief Scouts Commendation for Good Service.
During the day John is a Quantity Surveyor and he is a member of the team planning the climbing wall at the Dr Peter Centre, the new Scout Headquarters in Baden Powell Way.
John is married to Becky, a Guide Leader and the District Explorer Scout Leader for Young Leaders. Together they organised the activities for around 500 young people at the Romsey Scouts 2008 centenary camp which was held at Broadlands. John and Becky have a 6-month old daughter named Zoe.
“It was an honour to be considered for the role of Romsey’s District Commissioner” said John; “being involved with the Explorers and working closely with Darren, I know how successful the District is and I want to ensure that it continues to be a central part of the community and provides exciting activities and challenges to develop the young people of Romsey”.
“I know that John will build on Darren’s work, grow the District and increase the quality and variety of Scouting available to our members” said John Stevens, District and Search Party Chairman; “I’m sure that once he has settled in, John will start to develop his own leadership team to drive the district forward”.
So what of Darren’s future? Darren says he’s not going too far away and will no doubt continue with his County training role, as a training advisor in Romsey District and as a member of the Dr Peter Centre’s management team.
